Handmade for the Holidays Challenge

All items available on Etsy. See below for shop details.

Hello creatives.

Happy Saturday!  It's November!  I love Halloween, but just like the Lifetime channel on TV that's airing Christmas movies all day today, my mind is now fully on the holidays.  Last year I already had about half of my Christmas shopping done by now, but this year I've been a complete slacker and I haven't even started.  But that's okay.  And here's why.

I am committing, right here and now in front of you all, to a completely handmade Christmas gift-giving.  Just to be clear, this doesn't mean I'll be making the gifts myself.  Not unless all of my family members want photographs in different forms. Which they don't.  So I'll be buying all the gifts for this holiday season from an indie crafter or artisan.  Instead of lining the pockets of the already-rich-and-ethically-questionable Walmart, I'll be buying all of my gifts from local shops, craft fairs, Etsy, Brika, and so on.  All of this is in an effort to support small business, those why work hard at their craft, and who's sales profit go directly to feeding their children or pets.  It's guilt-free shopping, friends!  Following along in my handmade shopping journey via my Instagram page, where I'll be 'gramming (totally legit word) from craft fairs and shopping local days.

So who's with me?  I'm extending the challenge to you.  Declare it right here, right now!  Committing to a 100% handmade Christmas list is comendable, but any amount of handmade/support local gift giving you do is admirable.  Spread the word, share the movement, and SUPPORT HANDMADE this holiday season!

Cheers!

The Creative Wild Re-Boot

Hello creatives!

We've had a makeover!  Do you like?  I like.

Okay, so I know I've been a big loser when it comes to updated my blog.  As I mentioned in my last post, I was super busy with client work, which needs to take precedent over TCW.  Whatevs.  I don't like it when I see other bloggers do that, so I'm sorry.  The good news - I'm BACK!  I've gotten all of my weddings from the season edited and delivered, and am wrapping up fall family photo sessions as we speak.  Leaving me MUCH more time for blogging my face off.

Here's what up.  While I still will blog about myself and my creative life from time to time, I'm going to focusing more on featuring other creatives and their amazing work.  In the photography world their are loads of opportunity to submit your work to blogs and whatnot to get featured.  It's fun!  You feel special, get to put a "Press" section on your website (which reminds, I should get on that), and more people see and hear about your work.  I hope to serve the purpose for creatives from all over.  So, if you are, or know someone who is, a gifted creatives who makes pretty/cool/fun/interesting things, PUH-LEESE let me know.  I want to know about you.  You can be from anywhere.  This shiz is going world-wide.

Happy creating, friends!  You'll be hearing from me soon! :)

My life: Strawberry U-Pick

Hello creatives.

When I was a kid, my very favourite fruit was strawberries.  And one of my favourite summer activities was going to a strawberry farm and picking my own strawberries.  I can vividly remember going with my grandmother and my mother to a nearby berry farm with empty 4L ice cream containers just waiting to be filled with juicy, delicious strawberries.  We'd head out in into the fields, I'd eat my weight in strawberries, and my grandmother and mother would fill our containers.  We'd head home and make strawberry shortcake and enough strawberry jam to last us the whole year.  This is the first year as an adult that I've gone to a strawberry patch to pick my own strawberries and I'd completely forgotten how awesome and fun it is!  TJ and I went out for a pick on Sunday at a nearby strawberry farm, Beckwith Berries, and came home with 12 litres of strawberries!  And I didn't eat ONE at the strawberry field.  I sure ate my fill of them once I got home though.  Okay, once I got the car.

TJ, picking strawberries to his heart's content.  Wouldn't he make a cute farmer?

In pursuit of the perfect strawberry.

Other berry pickers.  I had imagined that it would be crowded there, being a Sunday and all, but there was so much room for everyone to spread out that it felt like we were on our own.

One my way to a full container.  It was at this point that I realize lugging around a big camera and lens was not ideal when berry picking.  Back to the car it went.

Two of three containers full of heavenly deliciousness.

My favourite part of strawberry picking - eating them! :)

With this batch of berries, I made strawberry shortcake, froze three bags, and made homemade freezer jam.  I've never made jam before and always thought it was way more complicated than my limited culinary skills could handle, but I was SO wrong.  Blog post of my super easy venture into the world of homemade jam coming up on the blog soon.

Happy creating!

Boston Terrier Rescue Canada Adoption Awareness Day

Hello creatives!

If you know me, even a little bit, you'll know how much I love my animals.  ESPECIALLY my dogs.

Mickey (left) & Ben (right)
Ben came to us from a breeder four and a half years ago, and was our only "child" for a while until we noticed how terribly lonely poor Ben was.  He's the kind of dog that wants to play all day every day, and every day is the BEST DAY EVER!  No matter what we, as humans, tried to do to keep him busy and entertained, he was just lonely for another dog.  I scoured the pet rescue sights for months, waiting for just the right dog to show up and give me that "he's meant for us!" feeling.  Call me crazy, but it really did happen.  In March of 2011, I came across Mickey's adorable little mug on the Boston Terrier Rescue Canada website and it definitely clicked that he was our dog.  He was the right age, super cute (in a sort of homely kind of way, which I loved), and even more importantly, the right energy level.  I contacted BTRC, filled out the application, met Mickey, and the rest is history.  Mickey came home in April of 2011, and I can't even imagine our lives without him.

Today, BTRC held an adoption awareness day in Ottawa, which was very exciting because BTRC is Canada wide, so events in this area don't happen all the time.  We ventured out to take them a donation of Canadian Tire money that we've been collecting for a while, and for Mickey to say hello to his rescuers and show them how great he is doing.

On our way!  But first, a stop at Starbucks so "mommy" can have her shaken iced tea lemonade.

Nothing like feeling that summer breeze blowing through your lips!

We've arrived!

Look at all that BTRC swag.

And hats!  Isn't he just the most beautiful model for these fantastic dog hats from Hats Enough Creations?  Talk about creative!

Volunteer applications...

Hang on... That stuffy looks an awful lot like me.  I'm skeptical of this small, inanimate dog.

Mickey greeting some of the BTRC people.  Thanks for saving me guys!

Such a happy face. :)  Mickey had such a great time with his BTRC friends....

Ahhhh... A happy dog, on his way home.

Mickey is a happy dog, in a happy home, but not all Boston Terriers are as lucky (and Mickey hasn't always been).  Please check out the Boston Terrier Rescue Canada's website and Facebook page to see what you can do to help sick, lost, and/or abandoned boston terriers.  Who knows, you might even find a new family member.  :)

Enjoy your weekend!

Save the Wildlife

Hello creatives.

This past weekend, Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary had their annual open house to raise money and awareness for their wildlife rescue.  I was fortunate enough to have the day off, so I checked it out with TJ, my sis-in-law, and my nephew.  We ate some treats, saw some cute baby animals, pet a snake, and I even discovered an amazing creative. Warning: if photos of snakes, owls, and turtles freak you out, scroll past those photos quickly.  Read on!

Little Ray's Reptiles were on site to educate the public about animals who live in the wild in our region.  Here you can see a kid holding a rat snake, and my nephew in the background looking very sketched out by the whole thing.

Isn't he just the cutest?!  So snuggly.

This is a wood turtle, also from Little Ray's.  Just hanging out.

Inside, there were so many babies!  Raccoons, squirrels, groundhogs, turtles.  Adorableness everywhere.

Outside there were stations that demonstrated the financial, material, and volunteer need to keep the sanctuary running.  Vet care...

Formula for the babies...

Bleach for cleaning, and food for eating.

Well hello there, handsome.

Shortly before we left, this incredible young singer took the stage.  Nayana Bhatnagar is only TWELVE YEARS OLD.  This blows my mind, because not only did she have the voice an angel, but she wrote her own songs.  And they were GOOD.  Like, really good.  I got chills just listening to her, she really is an unbelievably talented creative.

You can check out Nayana on Youtube, and trust me, you should. She's a very gifted young creative, and deserves your support!

My nephew had a good time!  Porcupine cake pops!

Get friendly with your Farmer's Market

Hello creatives.

You know how we talk about making a living being a creative?  And how we, as creatives, should be making an effort to support our fellow creatives?  There's no better place to start than at your local farmer's market.  Farmers are creatives too!  They create plants, food, recipes, soap, and more.  I can't do most of what is on that list, so I'm impressed.

This past weekend, TJ and I went to our local market, Carleton Place Farmer's Market, to check it out.  You can find it online here.  We've been farmer's market people for a while, and I even sold some of my work there last year, so this wasn't necessarily a new adventure for us but my most recent trip there has definitely renewed my commitment to support local producers.

This past Saturday was chilly (come on Mother Nature, enough already), so the market was slower than usual.  Nonetheless there were people milling around and supporting their local farmers and artisans.  High five, supporters!

One of the first things that caught my attention was this stuff.  Soy wax melts, for electric or flame melters.  They smelled SO good.  So good I wanted to put them in my mouth.  I didn't though.  Just to be clear.

The same vendor made these delicious smelling felted soaps.  Aren't they the cutest?

New this year at my local Farmer's Market is cooking demonstrations the second Saturday of every month.  This is the BEST idea ever!  Chefs from local restaurants or businesses come to the market and do a cooking demo, and the best part is, they let people sample the end result.  This is Chef Roger Weldon who is the chef at Generations Inn in the sumer, and also the chef for the Ottawa Senators.  He showed up at the market with only a couple of wine bottles and sourced everything else for the demonstration from the market.

Black angus sausages, radishes, mixed greens, pickled garlic, and barbeque sauce.  Yumm.

I LOVE this cooking table that the market had custom made for the cooking demos.  Check out the mirror above that show all of the ingredients and what's going on.  Brilliant. And mouth watering.

Chef, doing his thing.

The finished result!

I tried it, and it was as amazing as it looks.  Again, I cannot say enough how psyched I am about the cooking demos at the market.

Speaking of talented chefs at the market, this is Derek Pennell.  You may recognize him from Chopped Canada, which he WON (if you live in Canada, you can watch his episode here).  And he's from around here.  Which means he'll be a market regular.  Which makes me extremely happy.  See, Derek makes smoked brisket with his own sauces and rubs, and it's serisously heavenly.  If heaven melted in your mouth and tasted like smoked amazingness.

Here's that rub I was talking about.

And the barbeque sauce.  You can buy it!  Which of course, I did.

If you can look at this and not have your mouth fill up with saliva, you probably need to get your vision tested.  Or you're a vegetarian, which is cool too, but you're missing out.  Just saying.

TJ's face pretty much says it all.  We'll be seeing you regularly, Chef Pennell.  Check out his Facebook page here.

On to the produce!  Leaf greens, which also make my mouth water but in a different way.

There really is nothing quite like locally grown, fresh from the earth vegetables.

You can also buy your own plants here!  Annuals, perennials, veggie plants... Awesome.

Nanaimo bars!  And a whole mess of other delicious sweets. Get in ma belly.

One of my favourites market staples is the preserves.  Relishes, jams, jellies, pickles... They are ALL delicious and have like a billion uses.  You can use them as marinades, top crackers and cheese with them, wrap them in pastry with some brie, use them in sauce, as garnishes, and I'm sure a whole lot more.

One of my faves - red pepper jelly!

I hope my trip to the market has inspired you to check out your own local farmer's market next weekend.  Get out there, support local, and hug a farmer!

Now I'm going to make lunch because I'm seriously hungry after looking at photos of all that delicious food.

Happy creating!
